Royal Academy of Arts
The RA (Royal Academy of Arts) was founded in 1768 by 40 artists and architects. All the current academicians of the RA truly believe in the huge influence that artists have on the whole world. It is located in Piccadilly Circus and promotes the enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through a variety of events and exhibitions throughout the year from ancient sculptures to contemporary artworks. There are also events specifically for teachers and students that creates the opportunity to introduce the younger generation to new artists and artistic ideas.
Children/Family Activities
The Royal Academy offers engaging workshops and talks specially catered for families and young children such as galleries full of art and architecture or storytelling and acrobatic displays! Children under age 16 can attend all RA exhibitions free of charge. There are also sessions for children with special educational needs. Pick up a free Art Detectives pack for kids from the entrance of the RA or from the reception desk in the Front Hall. The pack comes with a sketchbook that your kids can use in the exhibition or even at home. It also comes with a pack of cards with many activities that focuses on the artwork displayed at the exhibition so you and the family can discuss and explore it together and build a shared interest of the world of Art. Pushchairs and buggies are welcome inside the exhibition but there is also a cloakroom where you can store them.
Food and Drink
There are restaurants, bars and cafes all around the Royal Academy where you can enjoy refreshments, snacks, a quick tea or coffee or a proper meal. The newly reopened RA Cafe in Burlington House is open every day from 10am until 5.30pm and offers a quick bite or a lovely afternoon tea or lunch. There are highchairs available in all restaurants and cafes.
